SUMMARY This project focuses on the design and modeling of a two degree-of-freedom dissipative passive haptic display. Haptic displays are man-machine interfaces that transmit forces to the human operator. A dissipative passive haptic display is one that may only remove energy from the system using actuators such as brakes and dampers, thus ensuring the safety of the human operator. These devices may be used to implement virtual constraints such as desired paths and obstacles. Traditional friction brakes have previously been used as dissipative and coupling elements in a two degree-of-freedom parallel manipulator, resulting in undesired effects such as vibration, stiction, and slow response times. Alternatively, the new robot is actuated by rheological brakes, which feature fast response times and smooth application of torque. This approach aims to improve upon the accuracy and " feel " of the previous design. A commercial magnetorheological (MR) fluid brake was selected and put through an extensive series of tests. The data was used to develop a model that characterizes MR fluid behavior in low speed braking applications. A parallel five bar linkage was designed and built that has separate configurations corresponding to 3-brake and 4-brake operation. The length of each arm was chosen by means of a geometrical optimization that weighs the size and area of the workspace and actuator effects. A simulation was then developed by incorporating the brake model into the equations of motion of the robot. Next, two forms of path following velocity control were devised and tested in simulation. Finally, the accuracy, workload, and smoothness of both controllers and both configurations were examined in preliminary tests with human operators.

Path-Following Control for Dissipative Passive Haptic Displays

This paper addresses the problem of following an arbitrary path with a dissipative passive haptic display. Such a display has energetically passive actuators; all motive energy must come initially from the human operator and the display may then in general dissipate, redirect, and/or store the energy. Due to the passive restriction conventional haptic control techniques are not applicable. Thre...

Torque Feedback Control of Dry Friction Clutches for a Dissipative Passive Haptic Interface

The control of a passive dissipative haptic interface using electromagnetic dry friction clutches as actuators is considered. The performance of the device is currently limited by actuator performance. A dynamic simulation of the system indicates that actuator torque may be better controlled with torque feedback, resulting in improved path-following performance of the haptic interface. Experime...

Controlling a Passive Haptic Master During Teleoperation

The primary goal of the research proposed here is to develop a control scheme for passive haptic devices used as a master device during teleoperation. Haptic, or force-feedback devices can be divided into two groups based on the energetic nature of their actuators, either passive or active. The research here studies the passive devices, more specifically dissipative passive devices that use bra...

Implementation of Arbitrary Path Constraints Using Dissipative Passive Haptic Displays

The problem of applying an energetically passive dissipative haptic interface to a path-following application is addressed. This consists of controlling a man-machine system where the human operator provides all motive power, and the machine may dissipate or redirect this power. The goal of a controller is to constrain the operator-induced motion to a single arbitrary degree-of-freedom. This re...
